About this course
Information for Partners and Supporters
September 1-30, 2022
The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE) is continuing to offer our self-directed, online course designed specifically for people supporting adult loved ones, or people they are close with, who have experienced sexual abuse as an adult or as a child.
PLEASE NOTE: This course is specifically designed for those who are supporting adults who have experienced sexual abuse at any point in their life. If you are supporting a child or youth, keep an eye out for our Information for Parents and Caregivers online course that will be launching soon.
What to expect
This course is self-directed. That means that participants will work through the content independently, on their own time, at their own pace. All of the content will be released on September 1 and will be available to participants until September 30. The content includes a mix of text, video, and other resources, as well as reflection questions designed to dive deeper into some of the topics discussed in this course.
The course starts with a review of sexual violence that covers foundational information about consent, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, as well as different impacts trauma can have on people. Participants will then learn support skills, including helpful things to say and do, as well as some things they might want to avoid. The course ends with a discussion about self-care and boundaries for the supporter themselves.
We want to acknowledge that sexual violence can be a tough topic to learn about and engaging with this subject matter at home and online may create additional challenges, even for supporters. Before enrolling in this course, please consider whether you have the right supports in place for you to safely engage with this content. Participants are encouraged to practice self-care and access community care throughout the workshop, and to reach out for support if needed by calling the SACE Support and Information Line at 780.423.4121.
Who it's for
This course was specifically created for individuals who are currently supporting an adult loved one (partner, family member, friend) who has experienced sexual abuse as an adult, or as a child.
For those with a general interest in learning about sexual violence and consent, or for professionals looking to bring similar trainings to their workplace, we recommend participating in our other online course, Recognizing and Responding to Sexual Violence. Find out more information about that course here.
This course is available on a sliding scale of $0 - $30 to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation. We ask for those who are able to consider a contribution of $20. Proceeds will go directly towards funding SACE services. Click on one of the links below to select the price that fits for you.
Serving the Edmonton community since 1975, SACE offers an extensive range of no-fee support services for people who experience sexual violence, including crisis support, counselling, court support, and advocacy. We also foster the prevention of sexual violence through direct public education and advisory consultation with groups and agencies undertaking their own prevention efforts.
